Pillar Rock – Via Slab & Notch

High Man – Slab & Notch – Moderate

But how?

How do we get to the summit of High Man, is often the question I hear. What is Slab & Notch? Rock n Ridge will get you to the top of this much talked about peak. Pillar rock is often approached from Wasdale Head, but is still a fair trek from there. Hence why it is considered to be one of the remotest fells in the Lake District.

Location

Pillar Rock and High Man is located high above the valley floor that is Ennerdale. Our route starts next to Ennerdale water, and after walking it from every direction. We believe this is the best way. That said depending on youre own accommodation choice, we can start at Buttermere or Wasdale Head. Another option for people is to stay at the Black Sail YHA which is super remote, and would offer a more leisurely start to you’re day. Alternatively there is Gillerthwaite YHA which our walk passes right by.

Fitness

The walk in to Pillar Rock is approximately 2 hours 30 minutes. This is before we’ve started the climb. That said you’re fitness level should be at least on our Bronze level. You will be out, on the go between 7-9 hours.

Graded

High Man via Slab & Notch is graded Moderate. This is a step higher than grade 3 in Scrambling terms. That said this route is very friendly and is definitely easier than most grade 3 Scrambles!

Route

Our route goes via Slab & Notch, which was first climbed way back in 1863. And a truly inspiring line of its time. This route nowadays is certainly achievable even if you’ve never climbed before. We will show you exactly what to do. And you will be roped up all the way until we get back down to the base of the climb.

Slab and Notch has lots to ‘grab hold of’ and even has comfortable positions to sit and stand, whilst were climbing. Of course the views are outstanding (If the weathers good of course) And there will be plenty of opportunity to take pictures. Likewise Rock n Ridge will take plenty if you feel a bit  ‘gripped’ and will gladly share them with you.

High Man / Abseil

Once we arrive at the summit of High Man, after pictures and high fives we must get down. Therefore there is a short abseil of about 14m, which leads into the Jordan Gap. You can see the gap between the mountains in the picture above. From here a short decent leads back to our bags, job done!
